SUMMARY: Transmittal letter for Amendments to the 1995-96 Federal Perkins Loan and National Direct Student Loan Programs Directory of Designated Low-Income Schools for Teacher Cancellation Benefits

Dear Colleague:

Enclosed is a copy of the Amendments to the 1995-96 Federal Perkins Loan and National
Direct Student Loan Programs Directory of Designated Low-Income Schools for Teacher
Cancellation Benefits (Amendments), which updates the 1995-96 Federal Perkins Loan and
National Direct Student Loan Programs Directory of Designated Low-Income Schools for
Teacher Cancellation Benefits (Directory) published in October 1995. Federal Perkins Loan
and National Direct Student Loan (NDSL) borrowers teaching full-time at these schools are
eligible to have a portion of their loans cancelled for each year of teaching service.

Loan officers are hereby authorized to cancel portions of a borrower's Federal Perkins
Loan/NDSL as a result of teaching at one of the schools in the Directory as updated by the
enclosed Amendments. Please be sure to review all cancellation requests previously denied
to ensure that all eligible borrowers receive the appropriate cancellation and/or refund, if
applicable.

Please note that the enclosed Amendments may be used to determine Federal Perkins
Loan/NDSL teacher cancellation benefits for only the 1995-96 academic year.

Questions pertaining to the Amended Directory should be directed to Pat W. Reese of the
Campus-Based Programs Systems Division, telephone number (202) 708-5182. Questions
pertaining to the eligibility for cancellation benefits should be directed to Susan M. Morgan
of the Policy Development Division, telephone number (202) 708-8242. Questions pertaining
to the eligibility of an elementary or secondary school to be listed in the Directory should be
directed to the appropriate State agency contact person (list enclosed).

Sincerely,
