Summary: Correction to the 2007-2008 FAFSA instructions for questions 37 and 81

Posted on 02-15-2007

The final version of the 2006 IRS 1040EZ form changed the 1040EZ instructions and worksheet for determining number of exemptions. Because of this IRS change, the current 2007-2008 FAFSA instructions for question 37 and question 81 are incorrect. The correct instructions for questions 37 and 81 are as follows:

"On the 1040EZ, if a person checked either the "you" or "spouse" box on line 5, use EZ worksheet line F to determine the number of exemptions ($3,300 equals one exemption). If a person didn't check either box on line 5, enter 01 if he or she is single, or 02 if he or she is married."

We are in the process of correcting the instructions for questions 37 and 81 in FAFSA on the Web and FAA Access and in online FAFSA PDF files. However, we will be unable to correct the paper FAFSA and Worksheet until future reprints.

Please note that the student and parent exemptions are not used in calculating the EFC, and the information reported in questions 37 and 81 will have no impact on a student's eligibility for federal student aid.

We are aware that some state agencies and institutions use the number of exemptions in making their own awards. However, we hope this issue will not have a major impact, since 94% of students now file electronically and FAFSA on the Web can be corrected immediately.

We apologize for any inconvenience to you and your students.
