Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

In the margin we removed mention of bulk orders of the FAFSA on the Web worksheet and added a note about the Department ceasing to print and mail any FSA publications except the paper FAFSA.

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

We added a second electronic announcement to the margin note about Renewal FAFSA reminders. This one also discusses emails the Department sent to students about the IRS DRT and about the IRS program to help low-income filers by providing free tax preparation services.

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

Because the Research and Customer Care Center (RCCC) has been retired, we removed the paragraph about it in the margin of page 8 and the bullet from the list in the margin of page 9.

Chapter 1, PP. AVG-8 and 9

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

We added a sentence to the second-to-last paragraph advising that when there is a Request Flag value of 06 or 07, the pertinent guidance for those codes must be first be followed in situations where a Data Field flag value of 1 indicates that the item was not changed and does not need to be verified.

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

At the bottom of the page we added the sentence about homeless unaccompanied youth and students who are 22 or 23 years old.

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

Because we’ve become aware that not all schools are properly reporting the results of V4 and V5 verification, we modified the second-to-last paragraph to admonish schools to report that information timely and accurately.

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

With the release of the 2018–2019 tax return transcript matrix on June 6, 2018, we replaced the relevant margin note.

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

We further modified the guidance about filing extensions to emphasize that it only applies to tax filers who have received an extension beyond the automatic six-month extension.

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

We modified the text about amended tax returns to show that when schools are aware that an amended return was filed, they must submit to the CPS any nondollar changes as well as any dollar changes of $25 or more. We also noted what schools are to do when they’re aware that the IRS amended a tax filer’s return without him or her submitting a 1040X form.

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

We modified the third bullet to clarify that when a student fails to submit verification documentation, the school may not originate or disburse any additional Direct Loans, whether subsidized, unsubsidized, or PLUS.

Updated Files Posted June 5, 2019

We added the sentence in the first paragraph on page 117 indicating that students who are less than 24 may qualify for a homeless youth determination. Because the prior guidance regarding 22- and 23-year-old students no longer applies, we removed the definition of “youth” from the margin of page 117 as well as the last paragraph on page 118, which pertained to that issue.
