Latest Updates
Dec. 7 Release Summary
On Dec. 7, 2025, we released an broad set of updates to improve the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) application experience for students, contributors, and partners. The changes included in this release simplify account creation and management, improve the FAFSA form experience, enhance transparency, and strengthen processing accuracy.
Streamlined Account Creation Process
We have simplified the StudentAid.gov account creation process to make it faster and more user-friendly. The new process includes the following changes:
- Fewer screens and fewer required inputs, shortening the account creation process.
- Challenge questions have been removed as a required step for login or account recovery. Existing users may still use their challenge questions if previously set, and challenge questions remain optional for anyone who wants them.
- Users now enter their address during account creation, eliminating prompts for missing address information at first login.
- It’s easier to claim and verify a mobile phone number on your account, ensuring every user can link the phone number that belongs to them.
- After creating an account, users can now go directly to their Dashboard without re-authenticating.
FAFSA® Form Improvements
- Lower Earnings Indicator:
- A new indicator now appears on the FAFSA Submission Summary, providing students and their families with clear, easy-to-understand information about graduates’ typical post-graduation earnings from their selected schools. The indicator is informational only—no action is required from institutions.
- More information is available in Electronic Announcement GENERAL-25-49 Methodology details and earnings data can be found on the FSA Data Center.
- Streamlined Form Experience:
- Users will no longer be presented with the four initial application onboarding screens to improve the nearly 2% drop-off rate during onboarding.
- Responses to the 1040 question (“Did or will the student file a 2024 IRS Form 1040 or 1040-NR?”) will be prepopulated for users who filed taxes married filing jointly and didn’t file taxes with their current spouse. The form will prefill the response to “Yes” and hide the question. Previously, students who incorrectly responded “No” to this question weren’t asked to manually enter the tax information that they needed to provide, resulting in more than 300,000 rejected applications (the top rejection reason for 2025–26 form).
- If a student’s spouse is not a contributor, they will no longer be asked to provide their Social Security number.
- Improved Search and Selection Functions:
- Users can now search for colleges by school name without first filtering by state. The drop-down list now displays up to 50 schools, and a user can select a school directly from the list. Accuracy of search results have also been improved.
- High school search now has a more intuitive user interface, updated error handling, and improved foreign high school selection.
- Search tools have generally been improved across the form, including clearer button placement, identifier descriptions, and field logic.
- Additional User Interface and Content Improvements:
- An interstitial page has been added between the Review Form and Signature pages to reduce drop-off rates and help users understand next steps.
- Users can now select the arrows on the progress bar in the mobile version to navigate throughout the form.
- Improvements for ITIN and Other Users:
- Users with an Alien Registration Number or ITIN will now be able to view and fully edit those values in the online FAFSA form. Users assigned a pseudo-SSN will now be able to view, but not edit, that value.
- If a user doesn’t enter a Social Security number, the field will auto-populate with zeroes.
FAFSA Processing Improvements
In addition to the back-end updates required to support the FAFSA form changes above, we have implemented the following FAFSA processing updates:
- Personally Identifiable Information Updates: We have made several updates to how we collect and display personal information, including better aligning state/province and country information across FSA systems. FSA will automatically update country codes that don’t align with new state/country combinations, though some users in foreign countries may need to take action. See Electronic Announcement APP-25-29 for more information.
- FAFSA Partner Portal Updates: Several minor user interface updates have been made to improve the FAFSA Partner Portal experience, such as resolving an issue that caused the “Navigate from Correction” modal to appear twice, improving comment code descriptors, and aligning middle names and suffixes with StudentAid.gov account data to improve users’ ability to identify students.
- Additionally, a fix was implemented on Nov. 9 to ensure that users are correctly asked to provide asset information and that asset information is appropriately included or excluded in a student’s Student Aid Index calculation. This fix addresses the error described in Electronic Announcement APP-25-28.
Oct. 26 Release Summary
On October 26, we released important updates to improve the partner experience, including several features requested by institutions and states in recent months. We also released several bug fixes within the StudentAid.gov account management experience.
FAFSA Partner Portal (FPP) Updates
• Ability to Print FAFSA Submission Summary: FPP users can now print a complete copy of the FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS), enabling financial aid administrators to provide students with a full record of their submitted information.
• New ISIR Comparison Feature: FPP users can now compare multiple ISIRs for a student so that the institution can determine which processed FAFSA information to use for accurate awarding of Title IV aid.
• Ability for States to Request ISIRs by SSN: All states can now request specific ISIRs by SSN. This enables the requestor to request a specific student’s record when needed instead of searching by broader filter criteria that returns multiple records.
• Updated Application Receipt Timestamp: The “Application Received” timestamp is now displayed in Central Time. This will enable states and institutions to determine whether a student has successfully submitted a FAFSA by a state or institutions’ deadline in the correct time zone.
Additional Partner Updates
• Year-to-Date Completion File for States: States who sign up to receive abbreviated ISIRs for the first time or encounter an SAIG mailbox access issue can now request a one-time, year-to-date (YTD) catch-up file in FPP. This file will help identify all high school students who have submitted a FAFSA form, supporting targeted outreach and engagement.
• Improved Identity Matching for Paper Applicants. The identity matching process for students and contributors using paper applications has been updated to increase confidence in matching results.
Account Improvements
• Social Security Number Now Displayed in Account Settings: This fix will allow users whose Social Security number (SSN) is not verified to see their SSN in their account settings, giving them more visibility to update their personally identifiable information.
• Authenticator App Now Available as Recovery Option: This update fixes a bug where authenticator apps were not appearing as an option for unlocking a StudentAid.gov account. • Incorrect Address No Longer Blocking FAFSA Completion: This fixes a bug where an invalid address entered during the account creation process caused a blank address in the FAFSA form and blocked user progress.
• Additional improvements to back-end authentication processes
Sept. 21 Release Summary
On Sept. 21, we released important updates to enhance the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form and navigation experience for students and families, make account recovery more flexible, and streamline authentication and settings for multiple account types.
FAFSA Form Experience & Navigation Enhancements
• FAFSA Application Progress Bar: All user roles will now see a persistent application progress bar, or “stepper,” across FAFSA pages, providing better visibility into their progress and helping them navigate more confidently.
• Modified 2026-27 Contributor Invitation Page: The contributor invitation flow has been updated to prevent users from continuing in the form without inviting a contributor when one is required, which will reduce errors.
• Prefill Parent “State of Residence”: When a parent is the logged-in user, their mailing state will now prefill for “state of residence”. This helps streamline form navigation and reduces unnecessary interaction with dropdowns.
• Prefill “Yes” to "Did you file with your current spouse?": This question will now default to “Yes,” and a new modal will appear if the user selects “No.” These changes are intended to reduce confusion and prevent incorrect tax information from being entered.
• Videos Removed from Onboarding Pages: To keep users focused on progressing through the form, onboarding videos have been removed. This allows users to pay closer attention to existing text guidance.
• New Highlight Flag and Banner in Online FAFSA Submission Summary: A new banner and visual flag in the Review Answers section will more clearly inform students of errors that need attention before submission.
Account Recovery Enhancements
• Fuzzy Matching for Date of Birth and Last Name: Users now have more flexibility when recovering accounts, as fuzzy matching is supported for date of birth and last name during password reset and account unlock. This reduces the need for exact matches and helps more users regain access to their accounts.
• Password Reset After Username Recovery: Users who recover their username can now reset their password directly from the username recovery flow, eliminating the need to go through a separate password reset process.
• Mobile Opt-In for Account Recovery: Adding a phone number now automatically enables it for account recovery, removing the previous step where users had to check a box to opt in for phone-based recovery.
• Account Recovery Improvements: Several enhancements have been made to improve the account recovery user experience, including updated URLs for the forgot username process, additional validation checks, and cleaner password reset flows.
Authentication & Settings Improvements
• Rate Limiting for Password Locking: Users now have up to nine total attempts (with cool-down periods) before being locked out of their account, providing more chances to recover access without being forced to unlock the account.
• “Did Your Information Change?” Modal: This update ensures that users are prompted to confirm their information against their servicer profile before proceeding to the "Confirm Settings" page, ensuring their account details are accurate.
• Refresh Token Update: The refresh token logic now ensures that users are logged out only after inactivity, rather than unexpectedly, offering a smoother experience.
• Updates to Account Settings: Changes to account settings now include required edit buttons to make changes to personally identifiable information, improved throttling to prevent unnecessary attempts, and the ability for non-SSN users to update their date of birth in settings.
Limited and Paper Account Improvements
• Fuzzy Address Matching for Limited Accounts: Incorporated fuzzy matching logic to improve address validation when upgrading limited accounts, reducing errors during the process.
• FAN ID Lookup for Paper FAFSA forms: A new FAN ID lookup feature has been added to assist users submitting paper FAFSAs, improving accuracy and reducing manual entry errors.
Sept. 5 Reprocessing Update
Six 2026-27 records submitted during the beta testing process were reprocessed due to Federal Pell Grant eligibility changes implemented as required by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBA) and described in APP-25-23. These records have a reprocessing code of ‘01.’
Aug. 29 Release Summary
On Aug. 29, we released important updates to support 2026–27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) paper forms, and enhance the identity verification process for financial aid administrators. These improvements are designed to reduce administrative burdens for schools and streamline financial aid eligibility determination for students.
What’s New
- 2026–27 Paper FAFSA form: This release enables the backend technology needed to support the processing of 2026–27 paper FAFSA forms. Students and their contributors will be able to submit applications and corrections using the updated paper form by Oct. 1, 2025.
- Verification of Identity Enhancements: As of Aug. 29, new functionality in the FAFSA Partner Portal allows financial aid administrators (FAAs) to submit identity verification (V4 and V5 tracking groups) results for students. These responses will help refine verification thresholds, helping reduce unnecessary burdens on FAAs and schools by enabling more targeted reviews. For detailed guidance, see GEN-25-36.
- One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) Compliance: Pell Grant eligibility calculations for the 2026–27 FAFSA form have been updated to align with OBBBA requirements. All new 2026–27 FAFSA Student Aid Index and Pell eligibility calculations are now fully compliant with OBBBA. Additional information is available in APP-25-23.
- Estimated Pell Grant for Provisionally Independent Students and Unaccompanied Homeless Youth: Functionality has been added to provide estimated Pell amounts for students with a provisional independent status and unaccompanied homeless youth without a determination. Once their status is confirmed, both students and FAAs will be able to view these estimates.
- Kosovo Country Code Added: Kosovo has been added to the country code list, allowing students and their contributors to provide accurate international address information.
Aug. 3 Release Summary
On Aug. 3, we released the 2026–27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form for beta testing purposes along with the following key improvements to both StudentAid.gov account creation and the FAFSA form experience:
StudentAid.gov Account Creation Enhancements for all FAFSA Cycles:
- Instant Social Security Number (SSN) Verification: Users who create a StudentAid.gov account will now have their SSN instantly verified with the Social Security Administration. This allows for immediate transfer of tax data from the IRS for users who provide consent. Users whose SSN cannot be verified will be notified immediately and prompted to update their information. Users without an SSN will continue to follow identity validation processes outlined in GEN-23-123.
- New Login Experience: The StudentAid.gov login experience now separates the email/username and password fields to help users break out the process into steps, especially helpful for those that don't remember what email, username, or phone number is associated with their account.
- New Account Lookup Tool: A redesigned “forgot username”/email/phone tool now allows users to search their account using personal details, which should increase success rates of locating an existing account
- Improved Navigation for Authenticated Users: Authenticated users now have easier access to find key pages, including Settings, My Activity, and My Aid, thanks to enhanced navigation tools.
2026-27 FAFSA Form Improvements:
- Simplified the contributor invite process: Students completing a 2026–27 FAFSA form can now invite a parent or spouse as a contributor simply by entering their email. The system generates a unique, non-case sensitive code, which is emailed to the parent or spouse. The parent or spouse can then accept the invitation by entering the code on an “Accept an Invite” page, assessable by the email or after logging in to StudentAid.gov.
- Removal of Manual Contributor Entry: To help reduce errors and missing signatures, students can no longer manually enter a contributor's information. All contributors must be invited.
- Simplified Gathering of Parent Spouse Information: For dependent applicants, the parent spouse birthday is now collected in a single streamlined question, and no longer requires the parent spouse first name, last name, or social security number.
- Updated Assets Question: Updated question and helper text to instruct users to exclude commercial fishing businesses from reported assets, to comply with the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
- Improved Review and Signature Flow: The FAFSA review page now excludes confusing null values and includes a new interstitial page that encourages users to sign and submit within the same session, helping boost completion rates.
- Redesigned Transactional Emails: Key FAFSA-related emails have been redesigned with clearer layouts and more effective calls to actions to improve usability and reduce confusion.
