Subject: Reminder: Submit 2016-2017 SAR and ISIR Corrections by December 23, 2016 in Preparation for 2017-2018 Renewal Reminder Distribution

In preparation for the 2017-2018 Renewal Reminder distribution, we are reminding all schools to update 2016-2017 Student Aid Report (SAR) and Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) transactions for their students with a current email address by December 23, 2016. Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements for a 2017-2018 renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) by December 23, 2016, will be sent a Renewal Reminder email between January 16 and January 25, 2017.

We encourage you to work with your students to ensure the most current email address is present on 2016-2017 transactions and to submit any other pending corrections that may be preventing the student from being renewal-eligible for 2017-2018, such as resolving rejected transactions.

What is the Renewal Reminder?

The Renewal Reminder is an important alert for renewal-eligible students, reminding them that they can use FAFSA on the Web (FOTW®) to reapply for aid. Renewal-eligible students who provide valid email addresses on their 2016-2017 records will be sent 2017-2018 Renewal Reminder emails.

Note: A student will receive a Spanish 2017-2018 Renewal Reminder if the 2016-2017 transaction that is renewal-eligible was created from a Spanish application.

Who is Eligible for a Renewal Reminder?

Renewal-eligible students must have a “good” match with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to qualify for a Renewal Reminder. A “good” match occurs when the student’s Social Security Number (SSN), name, and date of birth all match SSA’s records and the student received a match flag of “4.” A valid FSA ID is required for any renewal-eligible student to access their application.
